What you actually get for free
You can make an account, browse millions of user-made characters, create your own and chat for as long as you like without entering a card. That part is genuinely free and always has been.
What changed through 2026 is what sits around the chat:
- Ads inside the experience. Free users see advertising between messages, not just on the page edges. This is the single most common complaint in reviews this year.
- Daily swipe and regeneration caps. "Swiping" for a different reply used to be effectively unmetered for free users. It is now limited per day.
- Queues at peak times. Free traffic is deprioritised when the servers are busy.
- A weaker memory tier and older models. The newest chat models reach paying users first.
None of that makes it unusable. It makes it noticeably worse than it was two years ago, which is why so many people are searching whether it is still free at all.

Two things worth knowing before you pay:
The annual plan is the only real discount. $94.99 a year against $119.88 for twelve monthly payments saves about 21%. If you see "$119.88" quoted anywhere as a monthly price, that is a misreading of the annual total — it has never cost that per month.
(c.ai) lite is priced differently in different countries. We have seen it listed at both $2.99 and $4.99 a month, so check the figure your own account is shown rather than trusting any article, including this one.
Is c.ai+ worth it?
It depends entirely on how often you use it.
Worth it if Character.AI is your main chat app and you open it most days. At $9.99 a month — roughly ₹840, or about ₹28 a day — removing ads and the swipe cap genuinely changes the experience, and the annual plan brings it under ₹700 a month.
Not worth it if you chat a few times a week. The free tier is still perfectly usable at that frequency, and the ads are tolerable when you are not in a long session.
