What is Janitor AI? (And what is "Janitor"?)

When people search "what is janitor" or "who is janitor", they almost always mean Janitor AI, the chatbot site, not the job. The community nicknames it "Janny AI", and people often shorten it to "J AI chat", "j.ai chat" or "AI janitor".

"Proxy" confuses a lot of people. In Janitor's context it simply means connecting your own model provider using an API key. Is Janitor AI free?

Yes, the core site is free. You can browse bots, create your own and chat with JLLM without paying. What costs money:

• Janitor+ ($12.99/month, from 24 June 2026): about 5× larger context window (better memory in long chats), unlimited priority messages, a monthly allowance of "enhanced swipes", a badge and a shorter-reply model option. Janitor has said the base platform and JLLM stay free.
• Your own API (optional): if you use a proxy, the provider bills you, not Janitor.

Janitor AI beta: what does "beta" mean?

Searches for "janitor ai beta" usually refer to JLLM's beta label. The model has been "in beta" for a long time, which is Janitor's way of saying it's still being improved and may change. There is no separate "beta site" you need to find. If a website offers a "Janitor AI beta download", it's not official.

Janitor AI app and APK: what's safe?

• Official apps: Janitor's help centre says there are official iOS and Android apps and that "these are the only official JanitorAI apps". Get them from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or from the links on the official help centre.
• "Janitor AI APK": don't download APKs from random sites. Modified or fake APKs can steal your login or carry malware.
• Lookalike websites: several unofficial sites use "janitor" and "ai" in their domain names. The official site is janitorai.com. Type it yourself instead of clicking ads.

Is Janitor AI safe?

It depends on what "safe" means to you.

1. Content. Janitor AI is 18+ only and permits mature content, with rules against clearly illegal and harmful material. That's why it isn't suitable for teenagers, and why many people search for SFW alternatives. Filtering depends heavily on each bot and each model.

2. Age checks. In Australia and Brazil (from 24 April 2026) and the UK (from 15 June 2026), users must verify their age through k-ID using a face age estimate, an ID scan, or AgeKey. Janitor says it only receives a yes/no answer and never sees your ID (official help centre). Users elsewhere, including India, aren't affected at the time of writing.

3. Privacy. Chats are stored on Janitor's servers and are not end-to-end encrypted, which is normal for chat platforms. If you use a proxy, your messages also go to that provider. Don't share phone numbers, Aadhaar or PAN numbers, addresses or bank details with any bot.

4. Reliability. Janitor has had DDoS attacks, outages and firewall blocks. Some legitimate users see an "Access Restricted" page. Keep a copy of any story you care about.

Safety verdict: reasonable for informed adults who understand what they're signing up for; not suitable for minors; privacy-conscious users should be careful with proxies and personal details.

Janitor AI Reddit and Discord

The official subreddit is r/JanitorAI_Official, and there's an official Discord. They're the fastest places to check for outages, JLLM updates and Janitor+ announcements. As with any community, the loudest threads skew negative: common complaints are JLLM repetition, memory, the firewall and proxy errors. Common praise is the huge bot library, freedom and a friendly creator community.

Jan AI vs Janitor AI: not the same thing

People searching "jan ai" may want a completely different product. Jan (jan.ai) is an open-source, offline ChatGPT-style assistant you install on your own computer. It runs AI models locally for general tasks. It has nothing to do with Janitor AI's character chat. If you want local, private AI for work or study, Jan is worth a look. If you want character roleplay, Janitor AI (or an alternative) is what you're after.
